KU faculty, staff, and students can use these instructions to create a secure connection from Mac Mail (Mac OS X, version 10.5.4) to the University of Kansas Exchange servers.

These instructions assume that the user is using Mac OS X 10.5 or greater.

  1. Find Mail in the Applications folder on the Mac and open it. The Welcome to Mail screen will appear.  Fill in the following information:
    • Full Name = type your first and last name
    • Email Address = type your KU email address
    • Password = type your KU email password

    Click Continue.

  2. At the Incoming Mail Server screen, enter the following information:
    • Account Type = Exchange
    • Description = Type your email address
    • Incoming Mail Server = imap.ku.edu
    • User Name = Type your email username (the part in front of @ku.edu)
    • Password = Type your email password here
    • Outlook Web Access Server = owa.ku.edu

Click Continue to save the incoming mail server information.

  3. At the Outgoing Mail Server screen, type the following information:
    • Description = authsmtp.ku.edu
    • Outgoing Mail Server = authsmtp.ku.edu
    • Check the Use only this server checkbox if you are using Mail to connect to only one account.
    • If you will be connecting to more than one email account in Mail,  leave the Box unchecked so that you can choose which outgoing mail server to use when you send email.
    • Check the Use Authentication checkbox
    • User Name = Type your email username (the part in front of @ku.edu)
    • Password = Type your email password

Click Continue to save the outgoing mail server information.

  4. At the Account Summary screen, check to make sure that the displayed information is correct.   If everything is OK, make sure that the Take account online clickbox is checked and click Create to be returned to the main Mac Mail screen.

  5. You’ve finished the first part of configuring Mac Mail.  Next, you will need to set up access to KU's global address book. This will allow you to find the email addresses of most people on campus.

  6. From the main Mac Mail screen, go to the Mail pull-down menu and choose Preferences.  On the resulting screen, click on Composing.  In the Addressing section, click on the Configure LDAP button.

  7. Click + to add the KU Address Book.

  8. At the resulting screen, fill in the following information:
    • Name = KU Address Book
    • Server = whitepages.ku.edu
    • Port 636
    • Check the Use SSL checkbox
    • Search Base = ou=people,dc=ku,dc=edu
    • Scope = Subtree
    • Authentication = None

Click Save to save your changes and return to the list of installed Address Books.

  9. Make sure that the KU Address Book clickbox is checked and click Done to return to the main Mac Mail screen.  You’re DONE!
