Changing DNS Settings

The DNS (Domain Name Server) settings on your computer can affect the time it takes to connect to the Exchange server. If you are experiencing a slow response time when using Outlook please make the following change. If you have technical support personnel in your department, please consult with them before making these changes on a University machine. If you need assistance with these instructions please call the IT Customer Service Center at 4-8080.

Note for users with PeopleSoft installed:
The following instructions will work for you, but you need to make sure you also have a listing for cc.ku.edu (needed for PeopleSoft).

Mac users (OS 9 and earlier)
Mac OS X users
Windows 95/98 users
Windows NT users
Windows 2000 users
Windows XP users

Mac users (OS 9 and earlier)

  1. Go to the Apple menu in the upper left of your desktop and select Control Panels from the pop-up menu.
  2. Go to TCP/IP on the pop-up menu (or double-click on the TCP/IP icon).
  3. Under "Additional search domains" field type in home.ku.edu.
  4. If you have a listing for mail.ukans.edu delete it. (If you have a listing for mail.ku.edu you can keep it.)
  5. Go to the File menu and select Quit.
  6. When asked if you want to save changes, select Yes.
  7. Launch Outlook.

Mac OS X users

  1. Under the Apple menu select System Preferences.
  2. Under Internet & Network select Network.
  3. In the Show pull-down menu, select your connection type (e.g. Built in Ethernet).
  4. Under the TCP/IP tab enter home.ku.edu in the Search Domains box.
  5. If you have a listing for mail.ukans.edu delete it. (If you have a listing for mail.ku.edu you can keep it.)

Windows 95/98

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Go to Settings > Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network.
  4. Under The following network components are installed select TCP/IP->... and click on Properties.
  5. Note: If you have an ethernet connection (on campus) then you should select TCP/IP->(your ethernet card). Modem or dial-in users will need to select TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter. When you click the Properties button you will see a message stating "You have asked to change TCP/IP properties for a dial-up adapter." Click OK and proceed with the rest of the instructions. If you have a laptop and use both ethernet and modem then make changes in both locations.

  6. Click on the DNS Configuration tab.
  7. Under the Domain Suffix Search Order field type in home.ku.edu and click on the Add button.
  8. If you have a listing for mail.ukans.edu, select it and click on the Remove button. (If you have a listing for mail.ku.edu you can keep it.)
  9. Click OK to close the Properties window.
  10. Click OK again to close the Control Panel window.
  11. You will see a message stating "You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect." Click Yes.
  12. After your computer reboots, launch Outlook.

Windows NT

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Go to Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network and select the Protocols tab.
  4. Highlight (click one time) on TCP/IP Protocol and click on Properties button.
  5. Select the DNS tab.
  6. Under Domain Suffix Search Order click Add and type in home.ku.edu.
  7. If you have a listing for mail.ukans.edu, select it and click on the Remove button. (If you have a listing for mail.ku.edu you can keep it.)
  8. Click OK to close the Properties window.
  9. Click OK again to close the Control Panel window.
  10. Launch Outlook.

Windows 2000

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Go to Settings > Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network and Dial Up Connections.
  4. Double-click on Local Area Connection (or Dial Up Connection if you are using a modem) and click on the Properties button.
  5. Under Components check are used by this connection heading select TCP/IP Internet Protocol and click on Properties.
  6. Click on the Advanced button.
  7. Select the DNS tab.
  8. Make sure the Append these DNS suffixes [in order] field button is checked.
  9. Click on the Add button under the Append these DNS suffixes [in order] field and type in home.ku.edu.
  10. If you have a listing for mail.ukans.edu, select it and click on the Remove button. (If you have a listing for mail.ku.edu you can keep it.)
  11. Click OK to close the Properties window.
  12. Click OK again to close the Control Panel window.
  13. Launch Outlook.

Windows XP

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Go to the Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network and Internet Connections. (XP users in Classic mode will not see this choice. Skip to #4.)
  4. Double-click on Network Connections.
  5. Double-click on Local Area Connection then click on the Properties button.
  6. Under This connection uses the following items heading select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
  7. Click on the Advanced button.
  8. Select the DNS tab.
  9. Click on the Add button and type home.ku.edu in the dialog box that pops up. (If there are no suffixes listed you will need to click the Append these DNS suffixes [in order] button first.)



  10. If you have a listing for mail.ukans.edu, select it and click on the Remove button. (If you have a listing for mail.ku.edu you can keep it.)
  11. Click OK to close window.
  12. Click OK again to close control panel.
  13. Launch Outlook.
