Installing Outlook 2003 from a KU CD
The CD containing the Outlook software is made available at no charge to KU faculty, staff and currently-enrolled students for use with the KU email system on a University-owned computer and/or a home computer that they own or lease. Upon leaving the University, this software must be removed from the home computer.
- Obtain the Outlook 2003 CD from the Help Desk at the Computing Center on the KU campus, 1001 Sunnyside. It contains the same customized version of Outlook that is available for download from http://www.email.ku.edu/client/. The CD contains a compressed self-extracting executable file that will unpack all the installation files to a folder when it is opened.
- Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive and open it to view the OL2003.exe file. Double-click on the OL2003.exe file to start the installation process.
-
The following screen will appear. Accept the defaults and click Unzip to unzip the files.
Note: DO NOT CHANGE THE DEFAULT FOLDER (C:\Temp\OL2003); the installation will fail if it does not find the Outlook 2003 files in that location. If C:\Temp does not exist on your computer, it will be created as the files are unzipped.
-
When the files are all extracted, the following screen will appear. Click OK and you will be returned to the WinZip Self-Extractor screen. Click Close to exit.
- Before you begin the installation, close all other programs running on your computer.
-
To start the installation, click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of the Desktop and choose Run from the resulting menu. Type C:\Temp\OL2003\setup.exe and click OK.
-
The installation will begin. A screen similar to the one below will be present throughout the installation. Installation will take approximately 3-10 minutes, depending on the speed of the computer.
-
This screen will appear when the installation is done. Click OK.
- The default configuration will work on the KU or Edwards campuses or if VPN is used on the machine to connect securely to KU from home. Users that need to connect to KU email at home can configure Outlook in IMAP mode.
Starting Outlook 2003 after installation

To do this, open Internet Explorer, then go to http://office.microsoft.com. In the right corner of the screen, there is a link labeled Office Updates.
